In 2024, I was reached by a client seeking assistance with the sculptural works within the framework of the reconstruction of the Skorbyashchensky memorial complex of the Great Patriotic War in Ryazan.
In the summer of the same year, I designed the visuals and sculpted two monumental bas-reliefs for the installation on the site. The total length of the pieces is about 38 m, while the height is 2.7 m. This was reconstruction works. So, a key part of the project was the need to preserve as much as possible all the elements of the original sculptures remaining there at the time of reconstruction. Unfortunately, the original bas-reliefs, installed on the site when it was built, were made of plaster and have largely deteriorated over the years.
I made all the sculpting works digitally in ZBrush and provided the client with STL files, which were used for 3D printing and further production without changes. Therefore, the pieces installed on the site were created directly from the provided 3D models. It should be noted that during the work I used raw scanned data taken from the original sculptural pieces (mostly destroyed by the time of scanning). However, this allowed me to preserve the original sizes of each piece more precisely.
The assembly, installation and painting works on the site were completed by the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Thus, the installation of the bas-reliefs in their current form was completed by May 8, 2025.
Each sculptural project is, first of all, a large collaborative effort. In this very case, my participation was limited to the work on the bas-reliefs development and sculpting. The client carried out the production, installation and other related works by itself.
