GTO

I made these experimental renders using one of my recent sculptural works for 3D printing called “GTO”. GTO (or “ГТО” in Russian) is acronym for “Gotov k trudu i oborone” (“Готов к труду и обороне” in Russian), which could be directly translated as “Ready for Work and Defence”. GTO was the All-Union physical culture training system introduced in the USSR and designed to promote physical culture and sports among people of almost all ages. The concept was restored in Russia in 2014 with the same goal.

The presented work and renders are deeply inspired by the tradition of Soviet monumental sculpture as well as Neo-Brutalist style. The design of the base on which the sculpture sits takes roots of the project of the Palace of the Soviets designed by architects Boris Iofan, Vladimir Shchuko and Vladimir Helfreich in the 1930s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palace_of_the_Soviets

The black and white look refers to the series of artworks created by Russian artist Olga Mitich under the title “Techno-Antiquity” in the early 2020s. https://www.artstation.com/artwork/Aq2ZDz

Silhouettes of people that could be seen on the renders are taken from documentary footage filmed in USSR and promoting work out and sports. They could be found on YouTube as a part of the video clip for the song of Yevgeny Kibkalo “Sport March”. https://youtu.be/kpwYgxtrnO0
